The Yoruba socio-political landscape has lost one of its most revered voices, as elder statesman and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, passed away peacefully at his Lekki residence in Lagos on Friday, February 14, 2025. He was 96 years old.
The Adebanjo family confirmed his passing in an official statement jointly signed by his children—Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo. The family expressed deep gratitude for a life dedicated to service, justice, and the pursuit of democratic ideals in Nigeria.
“With a heart full of gratitude for a selfless life spent in the service of God, the nation, and humanity, we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo. He died peacefully this morning at his Lekki, Lagos home at the age of 96,” the statement read.
Ayo Adebanjo was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political evolution, widely respected for his unwavering stance on democracy, justice, and federalism. His involvement in the struggle for an independent and progressive Nigeria spanned several decades, making him one of the most influential figures in Yoruba politics.
As a close associate of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adebanjo played a key role in shaping the political landscape of the Southwest and beyond. He was an ardent proponent of true federalism and regional autonomy, advocating for a Nigeria where equity and justice prevailed over ethnic and political divides.
His journey in politics began as a young member of the Action Group (AG), where he served as the party’s organising secretary. He remained deeply involved in Nigerian politics through various phases of its history, championing democracy during the military era and standing firm against dictatorial regimes.
His leadership role in Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political group, further cemented his reputation as a voice of the people. Even in his later years, Adebanjo continued to push for good governance, restructuring, and national unity, always advocating for policies that would strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Following the announcement of his passing, condolences have poured in from political leaders, activists, and admirers across Nigeria. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described Adebanjo’s death as a great loss to the Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole.
“Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a true patriot who dedicated his entire life to the service of the people. His fearless advocacy for justice and good governance will never be forgotten,” Abiodun said in a statement.
Afenifere, the organization Adebanjo helped lead, also mourned his demise, emphasizing that he remained a symbol of resilience and integrity until his final days.
“His belief in democracy was total. He never wavered, even in the face of opposition. He was a father figure to many of us and a mentor whose legacy will live on,” the group said.
Adebanjo’s legacy extends beyond politics. A trained lawyer and journalist, he was a man of letters, known for his intellectual contributions to the discourse on governance in Nigeria. He authored several publications that detailed his vision for the country and the principles he held dear.
Beyond his political life, he was a devoted family man. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
His family has announced that consultations are underway with friends, associates, and interest groups to organize a befitting farewell, with funeral arrangements to be announced in due course. Condolence registers have been opened at his Lagos residence and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
