Akin Rotimi Jr., a member of the House of Representatives representing Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency and a key proponent of the Bill for the Establishment of Gifted and Talented Centres in Nigeria, has underscored the urgent need for updated legislation to support gifted education in the country.
Speaking after a successful public hearing on the Bill, Rep. Rotimi expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the proceedings and emphasized the necessity of aligning Nigeria’s educational framework with global best practices.
In his remarks, Rep. Rotimi pointed out that the existing policy framework for gifted education in Nigeria, which led to the creation of the country’s only federal government-owned school for gifted students in 1986, is now outdated.
He stressed that this gap highlights the urgent need for new legislation that provides a comprehensive and sustainable approach to gifted education.
“This underscores the urgency of creating legislation that aligns with global best practices and ensures a comprehensive framework for supporting gifted education in Nigeria,” Rep. Rotimi stated.
The public hearing for the Bill, which aims to establish dedicated Gifted and Talented Centres across the country, provided an important platform for a diverse range of stakeholders to voice their opinions and offer constructive feedback on the proposed legislation.
Among the key points raised during the session were suggestions for clearer funding mechanisms, a merit-based and transparent student selection process, and a robust framework for the continuous professional development of educators within these specialized institutions.
These recommendations, according to Rep. Rotimi, will be crucial in refining and enhancing the Bill as it moves through the legislative process.
He expressed optimism that the proposed centers would provide gifted students across Nigeria with the opportunity to receive specialized learning and support that is currently lacking in the educational system.
The Bill is expected to set a new precedent in Nigerian education by offering a tailored educational experience for exceptionally talented children.
