In a decisive move to uphold the sanctity of traditional protocols, the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owode I, has ordered the immediate dissolution of an unauthorized coronation committee purportedly established without his consent.
The monarch’s directive was issued on Wednesday from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, emphasizing that any future meetings or activities associated with this unauthorized committee would be considered illegal and intolerable.
Oba Owode underscored the imperative of adhering to established protocols, stating unequivocally that any committee or event related to his coronation must receive prior approval from his office.
In an official statement titled “Coronation Committee Setup in Oyo Town—Notice of Cease & Desist,” the Alaafin declared:
“Let it be known to all that any committee or activity established without the prior consent and approval of His Imperial Majesty and his office shall be considered unauthorized and will not be permitted to exist.”
The monarch demanded that all individuals involved in the unauthorized committee immediately halt any related activities. He further stated:
“The public and the organizers of this so-called coronation committee are hereby notified that no approval or consent has been granted by the Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owode I. Thus, all discussions on this matter must cease at once.”
Additionally, the Alaafin clarified that any fundraising efforts connected to the coronation will be managed exclusively by the royal family, who will also determine the composition of any official committee should it become necessary.
He expressed appreciation for the efforts of the organizers but reaffirmed that all initiatives or activities pertaining to the coronation must receive clearance from his office before being publicized.
“The royal family will keep the community informed of any developments regarding future contributions,” he said.
This decisive action by Oba Owode underscores his commitment to preserving the integrity of the Oyo monarchy and ensuring that all activities related to his ascension are conducted in accordance with established traditions and protocols.
Oba Abimbola Owode I was appointed as the new Alaafin of Oyo following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who died at the age of 83 on April 22, 2022, after a 51-year reign—the longest in modern recorded history.
The Oyo community and stakeholders are advised to await official communications from the royal family regarding any future events or initiatives related to the coronation.
