Donates five million naira to the victims
Distinguished Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, representing Kwara North Senatorial District, has visited the Gbajibo community in the Kaiama Local Government Area on Monday to commiserate with the victims of the recent boat mishap and their families.
The tragic incident, which occurred on the 2nd of October 2024, claimed many lives and caused untold hardship to the community.
During the visit, he donated the sum of Five Million Naira to support the victims and assist in alleviating their immediate needs. While addressing the community, the Senator conveyed his heartfelt condolences and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to their welfare and safety.
Senator Sadiq disclosed that he had earlier brought the unfortunate incident to the attention of the Nigerian Senate, ensuring it received the urgent attention it deserved. He further revealed that arrangements for the supply of relief materials by the federal government are underway, following his intervention.
Earlier, before proceeding to Gbajibo, Senator Sadiq and his team paid a visit to Emir of Kaiama, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar (Kiyaru IV) to sympathies with him over the incident.
The Senator commended the Kwara State Government under the leadership of His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON for its swift response and support to the victims and the Gbajibo community.
In his remarks, the village head of Gbajibo Alhaji Ibrahim Usman expressed profound gratitude to Senator Sadiq for his consistent support and timely intervention, describing the gesture as a great relief to the affected families. He also thanked the Kwara State Government and other stakeholders for standing by the community during these trying times.
Senator Sadiq concluded his visit by advising the community to adopt safety measures to prevent future occurrences of such tragedies. He emphasized the need for adherence to waterway safety regulations, including the use of life jackets and proper boat maintenance.
“We can not afford to lose more lives to preventable accidents. I urge you all to take precautionary steps and embrace safety practices to avoid a repeat of this painful incident,” the Senator said.
Senator Sadiq reassured the community of his continuous support and commitment to the welfare, development, and safety of his constituents, pledging to work closely with relevant authorities to improve infrastructure and reduce risks in riverine areas.
