There was pandemonium at the ever-busy Ilesha Garage Roundabout in Osogbo on Saturday morning when a Dangote Cement trailer suffered a mechanical failure and crashed into a Toyota Camry SE, also smashing a concrete road divider in the process.
The incident, which occurred around 9:15 a.m., involved a 22-tyre CNHTC Howo trailer fully loaded with cement. Eyewitnesses said the massive truck suddenly developed a gear and brake failure while navigating the roundabout. Unable to stop, the trailer rolled backward and in a shocking twist, climbed onto the front of a Toyota Camry SE, with registration number SGB 131 MT (Osun).The Camry, popularly known as a “Muscle Camry,” was driven by a woman whose identity had not been confirmed as of press time. The car’s bonnet and front frame were badly crushed, while the road barrier dividing both lanes of the highway was destroyed by the impact.Despite the terrifying scene, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.
Passersby and traders who witnessed the crash described it as “a miracle escape,” noting that the busy traffic at the roundabout could easily have turned the accident into a large-scale tragedy.The incident caused heavy gridlock as a crowd gathered at the scene, forcing authorities to intervene to restore order and clear the wreckage.Meanwhile, residents and road users are urging the government and safety agencies to intensify mechanical inspections of trailers and articulated vehicles, particularly those carrying heavy goods, to prevent future disasters of this nature.
