CONUA-UNIABUJA makes history, elects new officers

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA), University of Abuja Chapter, Friday January 9, 2026, elected its first-ever executive members to run its affairs for the next two years. This followed a directive from the Council of National Officers, to transition from the acting executive, which had served since registration, to a duly elected leadership on or before January 23, for the chapter’s growth and repositioning.Monitored by a national representative and Chairman, CONUA-National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, Professor Awogbemi Clement, the election was presided over by the immediate-past Acting Secretary of the chapter, Professor Issa Abdulraheem. Held at the Seminar Room of the UniAbuja’s International Institute for Publishing Studies, the election saw all new executive officers return unopposed.Those elected are Dr Chukwuemeka Ifegwu Eke, Chairman; Yusuf Bolakale Suleiman, Vice-Chairman; Dr Fasasi Kazeem Adeola, Secretary; and Raufu Musliyu, Assistant Secretary.Others include Mrs Shayo Oluyemi, Treasurer; Mrs Hamdalat Abubakar, Investment Officer; Mrs Amina Shehu, Welfare Officer; Mohammed Ilias, Financial Secretary; and Ibrahim Jimoh, Internal Auditor.Addressing the newly elected officers of the chapter, Professor Clement noted that CONUA’s commitment to its members’ welfare is fundamental, just as he urged them to be loyal to the union for the betterment of all.For his part, Professor Abdulraheem, who doubles as the union’s National Assistant Secretary, reiterated CONUA’s strategies of sustainable and uninterrupted academic calendar in the Nigerian university system through robust engagement with government and key stakeholders, stressing that using strikes to settle industrial disputes had become old-fashioned in the 21st century.He said the union would not relent in the pursuits of its members’ improved welfare, calling for solidarity of purpose among all members. In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman, Dr Chukwuemeka Ifegwu Eke, an Associate Professor of Digital Economics, thanked the interim executive members for laying a solid foundation for the elected officers to build on.Dr Eke called for members’ support and cooperation for the actualisation of the set objectives, pointing out that the peaceful conduct of the election signaled a new dawn of pragmatic academic unionism at the University of Abuja.
