Folorunsho Adisa Welfare Initiative (FAWI), one of the leading Non Government Organisation giving Hopes to the Hopeless in Oyo State and beyond has taken a significant step in its humanitarian outreach by extending compassion, empowerment, and practical support to inmates at the Abolongo Correctional Centre, marking a landmark visit aimed at promoting rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The visit, which followed an official invitation from the management of the correctional facility, formed part of FAWI’s broader mission to uplift vulnerable populations and restore dignity to individuals facing difficult life circumstances. During the outreach, the CEO, Princess Omolara Folorunsho Lawrence and members of the initiative engaged inmates with messages of hope, encouragement, and renewed purpose, emphasizing the importance of second chances and personal transformation.
As part of the intervention, FAWI distributed gift items and essential toiletries to inmates, bringing relief and a sense of belonging to many within the correctional system. The management of the correctional centre described the outreach as more than a charity gesture, stressing that it represents a deliberate effort to bridge the gap between society and incarcerated individuals.
Speaking during the visit, the CEO, Princess Omolara Folorunsho Lawrence noted that many inmates often feel forgotten by society, a reality that can hinder rehabilitation efforts. They explained that the group’s objective was to remind inmates that their lives still hold value and that opportunities for positive change remain possible regardless of past mistakes.
Beyond material support, FAWI announced the launch of a free vocational training programme, a key pillar of the initiative designed to equip inmates with practical, income-generating skills that can be applied upon release.
According to the management, the training will focus on empowering participants with vocational competencies aimed at reducing unemployment and dependency, two factors frequently linked to recidivism. The programme is expected to provide participants with hands-on knowledge that can help them reintegrate into society as productive and self-reliant individuals.
Princess Omolara explained that skills acquisition remains one of the most effective pathways toward breaking the cycle of incarceration. By investing in human capacity development, the organisation hopes to give inmates a viable alternative to crime and a clearer pathway toward economic independence.
The initiative aligns with growing calls for correctional reform that prioritizes rehabilitation over punishment alone. The management commended the collaboration between civil society organisations and correctional authorities, describing such partnerships as critical to achieving lasting transformation within correctional facilities.
FAWI emphasised that the programme is not merely about training but about restoring confidence and identity among inmates. Organisers expressed optimism that beneficiaries would emerge better prepared to rebuild their lives, support their families, and contribute positively to their communities after serving their sentences.
