Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, one of Nigeria’s most distinguished scholars, technocrats, and statesmen, has passed away just days before his 90th birthday.
His death was confirmed in a statement released by the family and signed by Barrister Oladapo Ogunwusi, marking the end of an era defined by intellectual brilliance, political service, and an unwavering commitment to national development.
“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, mathematician and engineer and renowned technocrat, a few days before his 90th birthday,” the family stated.
Born in 1935, Dr. Olunloyo carved a unique niche for himself across multiple domains, most notably in politics, education, and engineering. He earned global recognition as a brilliant mathematician and was among the few Africans of his generation to attain such distinction in the field. His academic accomplishments laid the groundwork for an equally remarkable career in public service.
In 1983, Dr. Olunloyo served as the Governor of Oyo State during Nigeria’s Second Republic. Though his tenure was short-lived due to the military coup that truncated democratic governance later that year, his administration remains notable for its emphasis on infrastructural development, educational reform, and administrative efficiency. He was widely respected for bringing intellectual rigor and technocratic precision to the political sphere.
Beyond politics, Dr. Olunloyo made indelible contributions to Nigeria’s educational system. He was appointed as the pioneer Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and the Kwara State Polytechnic, demonstrating his dedication to advancing technical and vocational education in the country. A traditional titleholder, Dr. Olunloyo was also the Balogun of Oyo and the Otun Bobasewa of Ife, testaments to his esteemed position within Yoruba cultural and political hierarchies. “His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates, even as we come to grips with this devastating event,” the family’s statement continued.
