A bill proposing to ban the rearing of animals in open spaces within Saki West Local Government has been introduced by Hon. (Alh.) Salaudeen Kabeer Adebayo, the Majority Leader of the Saki West Legislative Council.
The motion is aimed to address growing concerns related to public health, environmental degradation, and disturbances caused by livestock in residential areas.
The proposed bye-law stipulates that the rearing of animals in open spaces within Saki West will be prohibited, with strict enforcement measures to ensure compliance.
The motion also outlines that the Department of Environmental Sanitation, along with other relevant departments, will be responsible for monitoring and upholding the law.
The bill outlines several compelling reasons behind the need for such regulations, which are primarily focused on safeguarding public health, the environment, and the peace of the community.
In presenting the bill, Hon. Adebayo referenced similar regulations implemented in other communities and regions, where animal rearing in residential areas is either regulated or prohibited.
He cited the Animal Keeping Act, which provides guidelines for responsible animal ownership and aims to balance the needs of livestock owners with the well-being of the community.
Under the proposed bye-law, individuals who contravene the law by rearing animals in open spaces within Saki West will face serious consequences. The local government will have the authority to confiscate any animals found in violation of the regulation. Additionally, offenders will be subject to fines ranging from N20,000 to N100,000, depending on the severity of the breach.
Hon. Adebayo emphasized that the enforcement of this bye-law will be essential for ensuring the safety, health, and wellbeing of the Saki West community.
“This bill is a necessary step toward protecting our environment and improving the quality of life for our residents. It is vital that we address the growing concerns of animal rearing in open spaces before they become more problematic,” Adebayo stated during the plenary.
