The legislative process to establish a Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Saki has taken a major step forward as the bill sponsored by Hon. Kareem Tajudeen Abisodun, the representative of Saki West/Saki East/Atisbo Federal Constituency, moves closer to passage in the House of Representatives.
The bill, which seeks to amend the Federal Medical Centres Act to include Saki, was referred to the Committee on Health Institutions on February 27, 2024. After months of deliberation and scrutiny, the committee has now submitted its report for further legislative consideration, signaling significant progress toward making the FMC a reality.
Hon. Kareem has consistently advocated for improved healthcare access in Saki and the entire Oke-Ogun region, citing the long-standing challenges residents face in obtaining quality medical services.
Many patients are currently forced to travel to Ibadan or other distant cities for specialized care, a situation that puts lives at risk and increases the financial burden on families.
“The establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Saki is a necessity, not a luxury. Our people deserve access to modern healthcare without having to embark on long, expensive, and sometimes life-threatening journeys. This bill is about saving lives, creating jobs, and boosting the local economy,” Hon. Abisodun stated.
The proposed FMC will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, highly trained healthcare professionals, and specialized departments to handle a wide range of medical conditions. Additionally, it is expected to serve as a training center for medical personnel, further strengthening the healthcare system in Oke-Ogun.
Residents of Saki and surrounding communities have welcomed the progress of the bill, describing it as a landmark achievement that will transform healthcare delivery in the region. Many have expressed their support for Hon. Abisodun’s legislative efforts and urged the House of Representatives to fast-track the final approval of the bill.
