Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Ibadan’s Ladoke Akintola Airport to international status. The governor made this revelation during a meeting with Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff of the Nigerian Air Force, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan on Wednesday, June 26.
The approval comes in response to Governor Makinde’s request to the federal government to elevate the status of the Ibadan facility. The governor stated that work on the project would begin once all necessary documentation is received.
During the courtesy visit, Air Marshal Abubakar urged the governor to accelerate the completion of the ongoing 10-kilometer Ajia-Airport road project. This improvement would facilitate easier movement for Air Force personnel relocating to the base. The Chief of Air Staff also requested compensation for residents of the Ajia Air Force Base area to ensure smooth operations of the Force.
Air Marshal Abubakar’s visit to Ibadan is part of his operational tour of Air Force formations across Nigeria.
The upgrade of the airport is expected to boost economic activities and improve connectivity for the state capital.
