Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has formally endorsed the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. The decision marks the end of a nearly three-year interregnum since the demise of the revered Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022.

The announcement was delivered on Friday by Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, who underscored that Owoade’s selection was the outcome of meticulous consultations and traditional rites led by the esteemed Oyomesi, the kingmaking council of the Oyo Kingdom.

“The choice of Prince Abimbola Owoade followed thorough consultations and divinations conducted by the Oyomesi,” Oyelade noted. “This endorsement by Governor Makinde signifies the state government’s commitment to upholding Oyo’s revered traditions.”

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, praised the decision as a step toward resolving the legal and social contentions that arose after the passing of the previous monarch.

“This announcement signifies the end of socio-legal debates concerning the throne. It brings clarity and unity to the Oyo Kingdom, ensuring continuity in the revered Alaafin institution,” Ojo said.

As the Oyo Kingdom transitions to this new era, government officials and traditional leaders have urged residents to support the newly appointed monarch. Oyelade expressed optimism for a peaceful and prosperous reign, highlighting the symbolic and cultural importance of the Alaafin institution in Yoruba history.

“We call on all sons and daughters of Oyo to support the new Alaafin and join the government in celebrating this historic event,” Oyelade added. “We pray his reign fosters unity, peace, and prosperity.”

The Alaafin of Oyo holds a central role in Yoruba culture, serving as both a spiritual and political leader. The Oyo Kingdom, known for its rich history and influence, is expected to witness a cultural renaissance under Owoade’s leadership.

Prominent traditional figures, scholars, and cultural advocates have lauded the government’s decisive action, emphasizing its significance for preserving the heritage of the Yoruba people.

With widespread celebrations anticipated, the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade symbolizes a new chapter for the Oyo Kingdom, bridging tradition and modernity while reinforcing the enduring legacy of the Alaafin institution.
