In a decisive move to combat the rampant issue of illegal mining across Oyo State, the government has declared its determination to halt these unlawful activities, which have inflicted severe environmental damage and jeopardized the well-being of local communities.
This was included in a statements signed by Prince Dotun Oyelade, Hon. Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Oyo State.
The announcement came during a pivotal stakeholders’ sensitization and consultative forum convened at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan. Engr. Abiodun Oni, Director General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), underscored the urgency of addressing illegal mining practices that have long gone unchecked.
“This administration will no longer tolerate any form of illegal mining in the State,” asserted Engr. Oni, emphasizing the adverse impacts of these activities on both the environment and the socio-economic fabric of the state. He highlighted that illegal mining operations often divert millions in revenue from the state and federal governments, undermining potential benefits for local communities.
Engr. Oni outlined the government’s proactive stance, citing Executive Order 001/2023, which prioritizes the protection of mining communities in Oyo State. He stressed the importance of community involvement, urging traditional leaders such as Kings and Baales to collaborate by signing consent letters to regulate mining activities effectively.
Furthermore, the Director General affirmed that the State Government will oversee all mining operations within communities, ensuring adherence to Community Development Agreements (CDA) that benefit stakeholders at all levels—state, federal, local government, and community.
Hon. Anthony Ogunsola, Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, echoed these sentiments, attributing various community challenges to the infiltration of unidentified individuals involved in illegal mining. He called upon local leaders to assist the government in combating associated issues such as insecurity, kidnapping, and robbery.
“The signing of Executive Order 001/2023 by Governor Seyi Makinde marks a significant step towards safeguarding our communities,” noted Hon. Ogunsola, appealing to citizens to support ongoing efforts to uphold democratic values and secure lasting benefits for all.
In a reassuring address, Commandant Padonu Augustine of the Oyo State Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), affirmed their commitment to maintaining safe mineralized communities. He highlighted recent measures taken by the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, including the training of mines marshals to bolster efforts against illegal mining activities.
The stakeholders’ forum concluded with a firm commitment from all parties to collaborate closely in enforcing regulations and promoting sustainable mining practices across Oyo State. The government’s proactive approach aims not only to protect natural resources but also to foster economic growth and community well-being.
