Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq officially swore in the newly elected chairpersons and vice chairpersons of the 16 local government areas of Kwara State.
This follows the successful local government elections conducted by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission on Saturday.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Abdulrazaq extended his heartfelt congratulations to the new council chiefs, their families, party leaders, and community stakeholders who played pivotal roles in their electoral success. He emphasized the importance of responsible governance, urging the new officials to “be prudent with power and work with the people” to serve the best interests of all residents.
Addressing the new leaders, the governor outlined key expectations for their tenure: “Set realistic goals for yourself. Be conscious of your legacies. Be fair to everyone and yourself. Attend to the needs of the people, and be open to positive engagements across the board.”
Governor Abdulrazaq also acknowledged the current economic challenges facing the country, which he described as a transitional phase undergoing significant reforms. He urged the new chairpersons to remain sensitive to the struggles of the populace, advising against indulgence during these trying times. “As local government areas and the first layer of government, be creative, explore areas of cooperation, and complement one another for bigger accomplishments,” he said.
The governor concluded his remarks with a call for accountability, encouraging the new officials to prove their worthiness for the esteemed offices they now occupy.
Sunday Fagbemi, the state party chairman, also addressed the gathering, commending the people of Kwara for their support and praising Governor Abdulrazaq for his dedication to the public good. “This is a great moment. We have just cemented the foundation laid for the good of Kwara. We are thankful to the Kwarans for their support. The agenda is to develop Kwara and take the state to the next level,” Fagbemi stated.
On behalf of his fellow chairpersons, Majeed Podo, the newly elected chairman of the Ilorin South Local Government, expressed a commitment to diligent service. He assured the governor and the citizens that they would work tirelessly for the welfare of the people in their respective local government areas.
