Local flight operations are expected to resume at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Ibadan, before the end of 2025, following the ongoing extensive infrastructural upgrade aimed at transforming the facility into a world-class international aviation hub.
This development was disclosed in an official statement by the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who confirmed that significant progress has been made in the airport’s upgrade project, which commenced in earnest following its ceremonial flag-off on September 18, 2024.
The airport was subsequently closed in March 2025 to accelerate construction activities.
According to the Commissioner, the airport is undergoing a comprehensive transformation, including the extension of the existing runway from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters and the expansion of its width from 45 meters to 60 meters. These modifications are intended to accommodate wide-body aircraft in line with international aviation standards.
Prince Oyelade further revealed that the airport’s airfield lighting system has been upgraded to Category C (CAT C) standards, enhancing visibility and operational safety during low-visibility conditions.
Additionally, firefighting and emergency response systems have been modernized to ensure compliance with global safety protocols.
To facilitate the commencement of international flight operations in the near future, preparations are also underway to establish fully functional facilities for the Nigerian Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, and other relevant agencies.
“The runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads are currently at 55% completion,” the Commissioner stated. “We are optimistic that all key components of the upgrade will be finalized before the end of the year, after which local flights are expected to resume, subject to regulatory approvals by the appropriate aviation authorities.”
