The 48th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) commenced in Lafia with a strong commitment from its National President, Aminu Maifata, to prioritize primary healthcare and basic education across local government councils nationwide.
Addressing attendees at the inaugural session following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of local government autonomy, Maifata assured Nigerians of the councils’ dedication to their statutory responsibilities. “As administrators at our various local government councils, we want to assure the people of Nigeria, especially concerning primary healthcare, basic education, and other essential services,” Maifata declared.
The meeting, which saw participation from officials representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, highlighted the pivotal role local governments play in delivering grassroots-level governance.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Maifata expressed confidence in the capabilities of grassroots leaders to deliver democratic dividends effectively. “We know it won’t be easy, but with the caliber of people at the grassroots, we will provide substantial benefits to local communities,” he affirmed.
Maifata extended gratitude for the trust bestowed upon local government councils by the presidency, state governors, and the judiciary, emphasizing their commitment to justifying this confidence through relentless effort.
The NEC meeting is expected to culminate in a communiqué outlining resolutions and decisions aimed at enhancing local governance and service delivery across the country.
