The Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance at the grassroots, declaring that local government elections will be conducted in the state before the expiration of his tenure in office.
Governor Makinde made this disclosure on Tuesday while inaugurating members of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan.
He stressed that credible and transparent local government elections remain a core component of his administration’s democratic agenda and a critical pillar for sustainable development across the state.
The governor noted that the tenure of the current chairmen across the 33 local government councils in Oyo State is expected to expire in May 2027, adding that his government would not shirk its constitutional responsibility to conduct elections to usher in new leadership at the council level.
According to him, the conduct of the polls will further entrench democratic values and ensure continuity in grassroots administration.
Governor Makinde, while addressing concerns around political competition, stated emphatically that his administration is not intimidated by opposition parties in the state.
He maintained that the confidence of his government lies in its performance record and its commitment to fair play, noting that a level playing field would be provided for all political parties participating in the elections.
Describing the newly inaugurated OYSIEC members as individuals of proven integrity and professional standing, the governor charged them to discharge their duties with utmost transparency, impartiality and adherence to the rule of law.
He emphasized that the credibility of the electoral process would be central to public trust in democratic institutions and the overall progress of the state.
“You have been entrusted with a critical responsibility that has direct implications for the future of our democracy at the grassroots. I urge you to conduct yourselves in a manner that will inspire confidence and move Oyo State forward,” the governor said.
The members of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission inaugurated include Mr. Adebiyi Babatunde as Chairman, alongside Olatunde Theophilus, Chief Kunmi Agboola and Mr. Sunday Falana. Other members are Remi Ayoade, Olarenwaju Emmanuel, Babatunde Ige and Adebayo Mariam.
