Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, has greenlit the appointment of ten new judges into the State judiciary, marking a significant move to bolster the legal infrastructure in the region.
The announcement came to light during a poignant valedictory court session held in honor of the late Hon. Justice Adegboye Gbolagunte, where Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, shared the governor’s decision. Justice Yerima underscored the pivotal role of the new appointments in addressing the longstanding challenge of inadequate judicial personnel in the state.
Representing Governor Makinde at the event, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr Abiodun Aikomo, reiterated the administration’s commitment to enhancing the judiciary’s effectiveness through the provision of necessary resources and facilities for the swearing-in of the new judges.
In tribute to the late Justice Gbolagunte, Governor Makinde praised his legacy of integrity and courage, highlighting his enduring impact through landmark judicial pronouncements that have left an indelible mark in legal annals.
Echoing sentiments from the body of Senior Advocates, Chief Niyi Akintola, SAN, emphasized the exemplary character of Justice Gbolagunte, urging future generations to uphold and build upon his legacy of ethical stewardship.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Lawal, Chairman of the Ibadan Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), called on legal practitioners at both the bench and bar to emulate Justice Gbolagunte’s unwavering commitment to legal ethics and professionalism.
The approval of the ten new judges is expected to not only alleviate the workload on the judiciary but also to expedite the dispensation of justice in Oyo State, thereby reinforcing its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring equitable access to justice for all residents.
