Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially launched a major upgrade project for the Ibadan Airport, Alakia, with plans to transform it into an international airport.
The initiative, unveiled during a groundbreaking ceremony at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, aims to position Ibadan as a key regional economic hub in Southwest Nigeria and beyond.
Governor Makinde announced that the state government has approved a budget of 41 billion naira for the first phase of the airport’s upgrade.
He expressed optimism that the project, expected to be completed within 12 months, represents a strategic investment essential for the region’s socio-economic growth.
“This airport upgrade is not just a celebration; it is a well-thought-out investment based on solid data and logic,” Makinde stated, addressing concerns that the project might be merely ceremonial.
He emphasized that the enhancement of the airport facilities is crucial for improving the ease of doing business in Oyo State and opening the state to global markets, particularly in agricultural business.
The governor outlined the significance of the airport project, asserting that it would facilitate increased trade, tourism, and investment opportunities, thereby contributing to job creation and economic development in the region.
He noted that modernizing the airport is a necessary step in positioning Oyo State as a competitive player on both national and international stages.
