The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has announced plans to engage with labour leaders this week to discuss adjustments to pensions in line with the new minimum wage scale.
The announcement was made during an interfaith service held to mark the beginning of the New Year, where Governor Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing the welfare of pensioners and state workers comprehensively.
The Governor assured attendees that a sustainable framework would be developed to clear the backlog of pensions and gratuities owed to retirees in the state.
He acknowledged the unwavering support of labour leaders, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration in achieving these goals.
“Our administration will always reward diligence, and we remain committed to ensuring the welfare of our workers and retirees,” Makinde said.
He also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to tackling banditry and ensuring a secure environment for all residents of the state.
In her address, the State Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, lauded Governor Makinde for his consistent prioritization of civil and public servants’ welfare. She noted that his worker-friendly policies had brought significant improvements to the state’s workforce, stating,
“Your Excellency’s commitment to the welfare of workers has yielded positive changes that cannot go unnoticed.”
Representing the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, urged workers to recommit themselves to their duties for the continued development of the state. Similarly, the State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Justice Olusegun Olagunju, called on civil servants to maintain their dedication to service in 2025.
The interfaith prayer service was attended by a cross-section of dignitaries, including the First Lady, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde; the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal; former Deputy Governors; commissioners; traditional rulers; religious leaders; and political appointees.
Among the attendees was the Chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), Mrs. Dotun Olaitan.
