The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has downscaled flood early warning strategies to the grassroots in Kwara State, focusing on areas predicted to be affected by flooding in 2024: Pategi, Edu, Kaiama, Asa, and Baruten.
The event was attended by state officials and stakeholders, including the Secretary to the Kwara State Government, Professor Mamman Saeba Jibril.
NEMA’s Director General, represented by Daniel E. Obot, emphasized the importance of cooperation in managing flood risk, recalling the impacts of past floods in 2012 and 2022.
The Director General noted that 31 states with 148 LGAs are at high flood risk, while 35 states including FCT with 249 LGAs are at moderate risk, and 377 LGAs are at low risk.
The event included a key presentation by Micheal Ajide on disaster preparedness and risk reduction, identifying flood risk areas in Kwara State and recommending mitigation strategies.
A courtesy call was made to the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, represented by Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, who was briefed on the 2024 flood predictions.
The state was requested to fund SEMA for effective disaster management, and the Deputy Governor assured support for NEMA’s initiatives.
