The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has begun a closed-door meeting in response to the recent arrest of its President, Joe Ajaero, by Nigerian authorities. Ajaero was detained while en route to the United Kingdom to participate in an international workers’ conference.
Benson Upah, Head of Public Relations for the NLC, disclosed this development in a press interview on Monday. Upah revealed that Ajaero was apprehended by state agents without a legal warrant or formal notification, and his current location and health condition remain undisclosed.
The NLC has strongly condemned the arrest, describing it as a “brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation” and has called for Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release. The Congress has also urged the international community, human rights organizations, and advocates of democracy to observe and respond to what it views as increasing authoritarianism in Nigeria.
Ajaero was scheduled to address the Trade Union Congress in the UK, where he was expected to speak on critical topics such as workers’ rights, social justice, and economic equity.
In response to the detention, Upah stated, “The NLC has mobilized its affiliates, state councils, and civil society partners to remain vigilant and steadfast in safeguarding workers’ rights, despite oppressive measures.”
