Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has condemned the recent governorship election, asserting that it was characterized by significant disregard for electoral processes and the rule of law.
This statement follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) announcement on Sunday that Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious.
Senator Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, who garnered 22,761 votes.
In a statewide broadcast on Sunday night, Governor Obaseki urged citizens to remain calm and avoid violence in response to the election outcome. He emphasized the importance of peaceful reactions and encouraged those dissatisfied with the results to pursue legal avenues for redress.
“In the last few months, various political parties have engaged in rigorous campaigns to present their candidates to the people of Edo State, culminating in yesterday’s election,” Obaseki stated. “When the power to choose our leaders is blatantly seized, it represents not just a tragedy but a travesty of democracy.”
Obaseki acknowledged the disappointment felt by many citizens, noting that the election results have left a significant portion of the population feeling powerless against institutional forces. “It is understandable that many feel sad and aggrieved,” he said.
The governor also highlighted concerns raised by election observers regarding impunity during the electoral process. He asserted, “Clearly, there was a reckless disregard for processes and law during this gubernatorial election. In a democracy, there are safeguards for addressing grievances, and I hope those affected will seek resolution for this blatant disregard.”
Reiterating his call for peace, Obaseki said, “Peace and justice will always win in the end, and this is my prescription to all the good people of Edo State who feel vexed and violated at this time.”
As the state grapples with the aftermath of the election, Governor Obaseki reassured residents of the government’s commitment to their well-being and security, urging them to conduct their affairs lawfully amid ongoing tensions.
