The Osun State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the forceful takeover of local government secretariats across the state by reinstated Chairmen and Councillors of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing journalists at a World News Conference held at the Osun State House of Assembly Complex, Osogbo, The Speaker, Prince Adewale Egbedun, described the incident as lawless, reckless, and a direct attack on Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Prince Egbedun emphasized that the invasion of government facilities by the affected APC officials was not only a violation of the rule of law but also posed a serious threat to public peace and security.
He reaffirmed that the Federal High Court’s judgment on the matter remains legally binding and must be respected by all parties until overturned by a competent court.
The Speaker urged security agencies to take swift and decisive action to prevent further breakdown of law and order. He specifically called on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to demonstrate neutrality and professionalism in handling the crisis.
“We demand that the Nigeria Police Force uphold its constitutional duty to maintain law and order without bias or compromise. The responsibility of the police is to serve and protect all Nigerians, not to take sides in political disputes. The people of Osun State demand fairness, impartiality, and professionalism from security agencies.”
Prince Egbedun further warned political actors against resorting to unconstitutional means to express their grievances, urging them instead to seek redress through legitimate legal channels.
The Speaker’s remarks align with the recent directive from Governor Ademola Adeleke, who ordered that all individuals, regardless of political affiliation, stay clear of local government secretariats to prevent further escalation of tensions. The Governor’s stance underscores the state government’s commitment to upholding law and order amidst rising political tensions.
Prince Egbedun also appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to act in the interest of justice and security rather than yielding to undue political influence.
