The Saki West Local Government has demolished the popular Kolawole Complex, a decades-old commercial hub in the heart of Saki, sparking mixed reactions from authorities and aggrieved occupants.
Hon. Liadi Kabeer, Supervisor for Works in Saki West Local Government, confirmed the development on Thursday, stating that the exercise was part of a broader plan to remodel the structure into a modern business hub that would enhance the aesthetics of the town and provide a befitting environment for commerce.
He described the demolition as a step towards “beautification and standardisation” of business infrastructure in the local government.
According to him, the administration of Hon. Gbenga Akinola is committed to urban renewal and sees the complex’s redevelopment as essential to repositioning Saki West for sustainable growth.
However, the action has been met with stiff opposition from occupants of the complex who alleged that the demolition was carried out without prior notice and in violation of an ongoing court process.
Mrs. Feyintola and Mr. Abdrahman Badmus, both occupants of the complex, expressed dismay over the incident, lamenting that the local government’s move has left them without a means of livelihood. They noted that a legal dispute over ownership and usage of the complex is still pending in court, describing the demolition as an act of disregard for due process and the rule of law.
“The case is still in court awaiting judgment. We were never served any notice before the demolition took place. Our businesses, which are our only means of survival, have been destroyed,” Mrs. Feyintola said.
Mr. Badmus echoed the sentiment, calling on traditional and government authorities to intervene. “We are appealing to the Okere of Sakiland, Saki Parapo, and the Oyo State Government to come to our aid. We have nowhere else to turn, and this action has affected us deeply,” he lamented.
The development has generated widespread debate among residents. While some praised the local government’s initiative to upgrade business infrastructure and improve the city’s outlook, others condemned what they described as an “insensitive” action taken at the expense of small business owners already grappling with economic hardship.
Residents have also raised concerns about the legality of the demolition and the potential implications for investor confidence in local commerce. They argue that urban renewal should go hand in hand with proper consultation, compensation, and legal compliance to avoid further tension.
