The has arrested an 18-year-old man, Basit Tijani, in connection with the alleged defilement of a 17-year-old girl in Ilero, a community in Oyo State.
The arrest was confirmed in an official statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, , who said the suspect was taken into custody following a formal complaint lodged with the police concerning the incident.
According to the statement, the alleged offence occurred when Tijani reportedly lured the teenage victim to his residence in Ilero, where he is accused of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with her without her consent. The police described the act as a serious criminal violation and assured the public that the matter is being handled with the utmost urgency and sensitivity.
Mr Ayanlade disclosed that upon receiving the distress report, officers attached to the Ilero Divisional Police Headquarters mobilised immediately to the scene. The responding team secured the premises, ensured the safety of the victim, and commenced preliminary investigations.
“The victim was promptly rescued and taken to a medical facility for comprehensive examination and necessary treatment,” the statement read. “She is also receiving psychosocial support to address the trauma associated with the incident.”
The police spokesperson further revealed that Tijani was apprehended shortly after the report was filed. He is said to have confessed to the alleged crime during interrogation and is cooperating with investigators as the probe continues.
Authorities indicated that the case file is being prepared for legal review, after which the suspect will be charged to court in accordance with relevant provisions of the law. Mr Ayanlade reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, particularly minors, and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences are brought to justice.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any cases of abuse or suspicious activity to the nearest police station. The Command, he added, maintains a zero-tolerance stance on crimes involving sexual violence and child exploitation.
Community leaders in Ilero have reportedly expressed concern over the incident, calling for swift prosecution and enhanced awareness campaigns to safeguard young people. Advocacy groups have likewise emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between law enforcement agencies, families and civil society organisations to prevent similar occurrences.
As investigations continue, the police have assured residents that additional measures are being implemented to strengthen surveillance and community engagement across the division.
