Acting Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, has vowed to combat criminality with unwavering resolve following a deadly attack on Gbenpakan Village.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, targeted both Fulani settlers and Yoruba residents, resulting in significant loss of lives and properties.
On Thursday, Barr. Lawal visited the affected community to assess the damage and offer assurances of government support. During his visit, Lawal emphasized that the current administration, under Governor Seyi Makinde, is committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all residents, regardless of their ethnic background.
“We are deeply saddened by the violence inflicted upon our community,” Lawal stated. “The Oyo State Government is unequivocally against any form of criminality and will not tolerate actions that threaten the peace and security of our state.”
The Acting Governor’s visit followed a similar assessment by the state’s Commissioner of Police, who confirmed that the attack was carried out by unidentified criminals.
Lawal assured the community that a thorough investigation is underway and that those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Lawal’s visit was marked by meetings with both Yoruba and Fulani community members. He condemned the attack and pledged immediate relief efforts, including the provision of necessary aid to the victims.
“Our objective today is to reassure our citizens that Oyo State is a place of unity and peace, where everyone has the right to live and conduct their affairs without fear,” Lawal said.
The Acting Governor also highlighted the administration’s stance on tribal inclusivity, stating that while the government does not discriminate based on ethnicity, it will be relentless in its pursuit of criminals.
“We are not targeting any tribe; our focus is solely on addressing criminal activities,” he emphasized.
Alhaji Salaudeen Kabeer Adebayo, the councilor representing Ward Four in Saki West Local Government, condemned the attack as a senseless loss of life and called for enhanced security measures in the region. He also urged the government to address issues related to illegal land transactions and improve telecommunication infrastructure in the area.
Lawal’s entourage included notable figures such as former Deputy Governor Alhaji Hamid Gbadamosi, the state commissioner for Special Duties Alhaja Fausat Joke Sanni, Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperative Mr. Niyi Adebisi, and other key officials. The team also included security experts like CP Sunday Odukoya RTD, the Director General of Operation Burst, and representatives from the Amotekun security network.
