As Oyo State prepares for the grand coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, the state government has implemented comprehensive security measures to ensure a smooth and incident-free event.
The coronation of Oba Owoade marks a significant historical milestone following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. Having completed the mandatory 21-day traditional rites known as Oro Ipebi on March 29, the new monarch is set to officially ascend the throne in a highly anticipated ceremony.
In light of the anticipated influx of dignitaries, well-wishers, and traditional rulers, Oyo State authorities have deployed security operatives at strategic locations within the ancient city and surrounding communities. Security checkpoints have been established in key areas, including Owoade, Jabata, Akesan, Isale Oyo, Eleekara, and the School of Survey, among others.
A senior police official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that additional security personnel from the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other law enforcement agencies have been dispatched to maintain law and order.
“The police, in conjunction with other security agencies, are fully prepared to ensure a smooth and trouble-free event,” the source stated, emphasizing that intelligence units have been monitoring for any potential security threats.
The primary venue for the coronation ceremony is Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, where Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is expected to lead an array of high-profile guests. Among the dignitaries anticipated to attend are the former Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, diplomats from four countries, over 200 Oyo indigenes residing in Canada, traditional rulers, and prominent government officials.
Additional venues for the series of events include Ladigbolu Grammar School, Durbar Stadium, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Mini Stadium, and the historic Alaafin’s palace, where traditional rituals will be performed.
Local businesses, particularly the hospitality and tourism sectors, are experiencing a surge in demand due to the coronation. Hotels and guesthouses have reported full occupancy, with some establishments upgrading their facilities to cater to the influx of visitors. A hotel manager in Oyo, who requested anonymity, stated, “We have upgraded our facilities to ensure that our guests have a memorable stay. The security agencies have also assured us of adequate protection.”
In a move to allow traders to participate in the celebrations, the renowned Akesan Market, alongside other major markets, will be temporarily closed on the day of the coronation. This measure is expected to enhance communal involvement and traditional homage to the new king.
The coronation of an Alaafin is not merely a ceremonial event; it is deeply rooted in Yoruba culture and tradition. The Oro Ipebi rites, which Oba Owoade successfully completed, symbolize the spiritual transition and readiness to assume the throne. The event will feature a blend of ancient customs, royal processions, and modern state protocols, reflecting the fusion of heritage and contemporary governance.
With extensive preparations in place, the coronation of Oba Akeem Owoade is set to be a historic occasion that reinforces the significance of the Alaafin institution in Yoruba history.
