The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent Independence Day address, asserting that it exemplifies his administration’s insensitivity to the pressing issues faced by Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba emphasized that the President’s speech fell short of offering hope or concrete solutions to the nation’s escalating economic and security crises.
“Nigerians are dismayed that the President’s speech was a complete waste of time, as it did not address any critical issues or present strategies to tackle the severe hardships inflicted on citizens by the APC government,” Ologunagba stated.
He articulated the party’s belief that the speech overlooked the urgent needs and demands of the populace, especially in light of rising economic pressures and insecurity.
The PDP highlighted that the address ignored the plight of millions struggling under what they termed “life-suffocating policies” implemented by the Tinubu administration.
“It’s shocking that the President trivialized the severe economic hardship, widespread hunger, and poverty that have gripped the nation by downplaying the fact that over 100 million Nigerians can no longer afford daily necessities,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the party criticized Tinubu’s claims regarding economic improvement and food sufficiency, labeling them as “unrealistic.”
The PDP pointed out the administration’s failure to address critical issues such as high fuel prices, the weakening of the Naira, and insufficient investments in key productive sectors.
“It is clear that the APC-led government is out of touch with Nigerians, especially the youth, as it continues to ignore calls for meaningful action to reduce fuel prices, create jobs, and end the profligacy in government spending,” the PDP asserted, echoing concerns that the current leadership is disconnected from the realities faced by everyday citizens.
In a final note, the PDP expressed alarm over what they perceive as the President’s silence on electoral integrity and citizens’ rights, suggesting a potential threat to the nation’s democratic processes. The opposition party concluded that the lack of acknowledgment of these critical issues indicates a troubling intent to undermine democratic values in Nigeria.
