… Reaffirms Their Beliefs on Local Government Autonomy
The PDP Governors’ Forum convened yesterday in Enugu to address pressing national issues affecting Nigeria. The meeting hosted by His Excellency Peter Mba, attended by governors from across the country, focused on several critical topics including upcoming congresses, economic hardships, minimum wage negotiations, and inter-governmental relations.
The forum began by discussing the forthcoming congresses, emphasizing the need for inclusivity, transparency, fairness, and adherence to the constitution of the party. Governors stressed the importance of democratic processes in selecting party leaders at all levels, ensuring that all members have a voice in the decision-making process.
A substantial portion of the deliberations centered on the unprecedented hardships faced by Nigerians under the current APC-led Federal Government. The forum expressed deep concern over the dismal performance of the government, which has exacerbated economic challenges for the majority of citizens.
Regarding the minimum wage negotiations, the forum unanimously supported the justifiability of labor’s demand for a substantial salary increase. They underscored the importance of balancing these demands with the financial capabilities of each level of government to meet their fiscal obligations effectively.
Another critical issue deliberated was the autonomy and funding of local governments. The forum reaffirmed its belief in the efficacy of local governments as a means to bring governance closer to the people, in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended). They pledged continued support for local government autonomy, advocating for its full implementation to strengthen grassroots governance and service delivery.
