Residence Urge Governor Adeleke for Swift Action
Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, is facing increasing safety challenges due to inadequate street lighting, according to recent reports. Several areas across the city, including Alekuwodo, Onababaona, Testing Ground, Oke Fia, Osogbo-Ikirun Highway, Ring Road, and Station Road, have become high-risk zones for residents, especially after dark.
Residents have reported a surge in crimes such as armed robberies, kidnappings, and bag snatchings. The Osun State Police Command recently issued a warning to motorcycle riders about an increase in motorcycle thefts, further highlighting the security issues.
The poor illumination has also been linked to traffic accidents and delays in emergency response times. Local business owners claim that the lack of lighting has led to reduced patronage, forcing many to close early due to security concerns.
This situation contrasts sharply with the well-lit Osogbo of recent years. Former Governors Rauf Aregbesola and Adegboyega Oyetola had implemented lighting projects, but reports suggest that over 90% of the installed street lights are now non-functional.
During his 2022 campaign, current Governor Ademola Adeleke promised to address infrastructural inadequacies, including street lighting. However, residents say these improvements have yet to materialize. A recent survey found that only a small portion of the 20km stretch from Akoda to Ota-Efun has functioning street lights.
Community members are calling on Governor Adeleke to prioritize the restoration and expansion of street lighting in Osogbo and other cities. Suggestions include conducting a thorough assessment of poorly lit areas, developing a phased installation plan, increasing night patrols, and establishing a maintenance schedule for existing lights.
As the situation continues, many residents view the improvement of street lighting as crucial for enhancing safety, security, and overall community well-being in Osogbo.
