In a poignant address to the nation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary by acknowledging the pressing challenges facing citizens, including rising living costs and unemployment. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing these issues through sustainable reforms, urging patience as positive changes begin to emerge.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since its founding in 1960, President Tinubu highlighted the aspirations of the nation’s founding fathers, who envisioned a country that would lead Africa in overcoming poverty and underdevelopment. He noted that despite the challenges encountered over the decades, including civil strife and economic hardship, Nigeria remains a resilient and united nation.
“While it is tempting to focus on what has been left undone, we must recognize how far we have come in maintaining our unity,” he said, emphasizing the strength of the Nigerian spirit.
The President detailed recent achievements in national security, announcing significant progress in combating terrorism and banditry. He reported the elimination of over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders, restoring peace to various affected communities and allowing thousands to return home. Tinubu expressed confidence that continued security efforts will enhance agricultural productivity, leading to reduced food costs.
On the economic front, President Tinubu underscored ongoing reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy. He reported attracting over $30 billion in foreign direct investment and highlighted the importance of a disciplined monetary policy, which has maintained foreign reserves despite significant challenges.
In a bid to address the high cost of living, particularly food prices, the government is launching initiatives to bolster agricultural production. Tinubu commended several state governors for participating in the agricultural production program and announced plans to establish a local assembly plant for farm equipment to support mechanized farming.
Looking ahead, President Tinubu announced the convening of a National Youth Conference to empower young Nigerians—who make up over 60% of the population—to actively participate in shaping the country’s future. This 30-day conference will address critical issues like education, employment, and innovation, ensuring that the voices of young people are integral to policy-making.
He also introduced several youth-centric programs, including the Technical Talents programme and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, aimed at fostering opportunities for the youth. Additionally, a new employment initiative is set to create 2.5 million jobs annually.
Concluding his address, President Tinubu called on all Nigerians to join the government in working towards a brighter future, emphasizing resilience and the collective strength of the nation. He expressed optimism for better days ahead and encouraged citizens to believe in Nigeria’s potential.
“Together, we will cultivate a Nigeria that reflects the aspirations of all its citizens, a nation that resonates with pride, dignity, and shared success,” he stated, wishing all Nigerians a happy Independence Anniversary.
