A tense and rowdy atmosphere engulfed the House of Representatives plenary on Tuesday after Mr. Akin Rotimi, the spokesman of the Green Chamber, declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s controversial tax reform bills.
Rotimi’s remarks, which came during a presentation of two reports on behalf of the Chairman of the Committee on Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring, Boma Goodhead, led to an uproar among his colleagues.
Rotimi, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was tasked with presenting the reports during Tuesday’s session, as the committee chairman, Goodhead, was absent. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the plenary, officially recognized Rotimi to conduct the brief exercise.
However, the situation quickly escalated when Rotimi used his platform to voice the position of Ekiti State’s federal lawmakers on the four tax reform bills that were transmitted to the National Assembly on September 3, 2024.
These bills, which include significant changes to the country’s tax system, have stirred heated debate and opposition, particularly from lawmakers who are concerned about their potential impact on the economy and the average citizen.
Rotimi’s expression of support for the bills, which have been widely criticized by various segments of the Nigerian public, did not sit well with several members of the House.
