…Condemns LG Chairmen’s Decision to Withdraw From ALGON
The Saki Youth Organization (SYO) has issued a press release welcoming the Supreme Court’s recent judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments in Nigeria. The organization views this landmark decision as a crucial step toward decentralizing power, fostering grassroots development, and enhancing democratic governance.
In a statement signed by Kazeem Olamilekan Oladejo, President, Saki Youth Organization, the organization praised the Supreme Court for upholding the constitution and recognizing local governments’ right to manage their finances independently. They also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to advancing grassroots development across Nigeria.
Despite celebrating the ruling, the SYO emphasized that the battle for local government emancipation is not over.
They called for the National Assembly to abolish the State Independent Electoral Commission, advocating instead for the Independent National Electoral Commission to oversee local government elections, thereby ensuring complete autonomy.
The SYO expressed disappointment with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s reaction to the Supreme Court judgment. They criticized his dismissal of the ruling as a distraction and his opposition to local government autonomy.
Additionally, they condemned the local government chairmen’s decision to withdraw from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) as an attempt to obstruct federal efforts for reform.
Addressing Hon. Gbenga Akinola, Chairman of Saki West Local Government, the SYO issued a warning to fully implement the Supreme Court judgment. They urged Akinola to prioritize the interests of Saki West residents over political affiliations and to embrace the new era of autonomy.
The organization outlined key expectations for the Chairman ranging from transparent, community focus, Stakeholder Engagement, Institutional Strengthening, Accountability among others.
SYO therefore pledged to use all legal means to ensure that Saki West Local Government achieves true autonomy as affirmed by the Supreme Court. They called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), civil society organizations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to join them in monitoring local government activities to ensure judicious use of allocated funds.
The organization emphasized the importance of advocacy for good governance and transparency at the local government level and beyond. They vowed to remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to promote democratic principles and effective governance.
