The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) following a rigorous screening process. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation during plenary on Wednesday after she was cleared by voice vote.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s screening lasted nearly two hours, during which lawmakers posed various questions, particularly focusing on potential judicial reforms. The session concluded with her endorsement by the Committee of the Whole, reaffirming her suitability for the role.
This confirmation is pursuant to Section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint the CJN based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council (NJC) and requires Senate approval. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally submitted her nomination through a letter read by Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, emphasizing the need for prompt consideration and approval.
In his announcement, Akpabio assured the public that under Kekere-Ekun’s leadership, Nigeria would witness an enhancement of justice. He congratulated her on the new role and urged her to maintain the integrity of the judiciary.
During her screening, Justice Kekere-Ekun, who has served in an acting capacity since August following Justice Olukayode Ariwoola’s retirement, expressed a strong stance against corruption within the judiciary. “I have zero tolerance for corruption,” she declared, underscoring her commitment to judicial integrity. She also stated that all pre-election matters would be resolved at the Court of Appeal, highlighting her focus on expediting judicial processes.
The screening session was notably inclusive, as the Senate suspended its standing rules to allow visitors, including Supreme Court justices and senior presidential aides, to attend.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun now stands as Nigeria’s 23rd substantive Chief Justice and the second woman to hold this esteemed position in the country’s history. Her appointment is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the judiciary as it navigates ongoing challenges and reforms.
