Senator Buhari AbdulFatai has called on the Federal Government to prioritize the urgent rehabilitation of the Ogbomoso-Oyo Trunk A road and to expedite the construction of the new Ogbomoso-Oyo expressway.
His appeal, made during a Senate session on Wednesday, underscores the critical role of transportation in facilitating the movement of goods and enhancing economic activities both within Nigeria and across its borders.
Presenting a motion on the Ogbomoso-Oyo Trunk A and new expressway, Senator Buhari highlighted a recent tragedy that has significantly impacted the local community.
“In the last month, the people of Ogbomoso land have been plunged into an unprecedented crisis, occasioned by a tragic petrol tanker accident that occurred on the road,” he stated.
The incident not only resulted in extensive traffic gridlock but also left some residents homeless, paralyzed economic activities, and tragically claimed innocent lives.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation and Aerospace Development, Buhari expressed particular concern about a specific deteriorating section of the road, which spans less than 500 meters.
He described this area as a “death trap,” noting that over ten accidents had occurred in just a few days, leading to fatalities, injuries, and significant losses for local businesses. “Perishable goods from the North have been ruined, resulting in the loss of hard-earned money for many,” he added.
Contributing to the motion, Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central emphasized the historical neglect of the road, which serves as a vital link between the Southwest and Northern regions of Nigeria.
He reminded fellow senators that the Ogbomoso/Oyo road was awarded in 2005, with work commencing in 2007, yet completion remains elusive. “It has become an eyesore for those who traverse the road,” he remarked.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, took note of the urgency of the situation and advised Senator Buhari to include a provision for the Senate Committee on Works to report back after meeting with the Minister of Works within three weeks. All the prayers contained in the motion were subsequently approved by the Senate.
Senator Buhari’s appeal reflects growing concerns about the state of infrastructure in Nigeria and its impact on local communities. As discussions continue, the hope is that prompt action will be taken to alleviate the challenges faced by the people of Ogbomoso and improve transportation links across the region.
