Senator Fatai Buhari, representing Oyo North Senatorial District, may face a recall from the National Assembly following his alleged disrespect towards Oke-Ogun traditional institutions. This development follows growing discontent over his remarks regarding the siting of the proposed Federal University of Agriculture in Okeho and his reported misrepresentation of the Okere of Saki’s stance on the matter.
Dr. Ismail Adewoyin, a key stakeholder in the Oke-Ogun Development and a leader of Saki Parapo, hinted at the recall process during a press briefing. He criticized Senator Buhari’s handling of the situation, particularly his refusal to apologize to the region’s traditional rulers and his alleged attempts to sow discord among Oke-Ogun communities.
“The senator’s actions are not just disrespectful but a deliberate attempt to create division in Oke-Ogun. Instead of addressing concerns and making amends, he has allowed his aides and supporters to attack critics. This is unacceptable, and efforts are now in motion to recall him,” Adewoyin stated.
The controversy began when Senator Buhari, in a recent radio interview, claimed that the Okere of Saki was unhappy with the location of the new university in Okeho. However, Adewoyin and other regional stakeholders refuted this claim, calling it a blatant lie meant to manipulate public opinion. According to Adewoyin, the Okere never opposed the university’s location but merely expressed satisfaction that Oke-Ogun was finally getting a federal institution.
Stakeholders have also accused Senator Buhari of failing to explain on the bill initially specified Saki as the location but was later altered to an ambiguous “anywhere in Oke-Ogun,” raising suspicions of political maneuvering.
Community leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations in Oke-Ogun are reportedly holding consultations on the legal steps required to initiate the recall process. Under Nigerian law, a senator can be recalled if a petition is signed by at least 50% of registered voters in the senatorial district and approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
As tensions rise, many are watching closely to see how Senator Buhari responds to the growing call for accountability. For now, the prospect of his recall remains a significant political development in Oyo North.
