Sunday Igboho Issues Fresh Eviction Notice to Fulani Herders in Southwest

Must read

In a latest development surrounding the ongoing tensions between Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, and Fulani herders in the Southwest region of Nigeria, Igboho has purportedly issued a fresh eviction notice to the herders. This move comes amidst rising incidents of kidnapping and robbery attributed to the herders in the area.

According to Igboho’s spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, the activist conveyed the message through an audio recording, reiterating his stance that all “notorious herders” who are involved in criminal activities must leave the Southwest immediately. The authenticity of the notice has not been independently verified, but it has sparked renewed tensions in the affected communities.

Residents from the Oke Ogun area of Oyo State, where the grievances against the herders have been particularly vocal, have voiced support for Igboho’s actions. They cite ongoing instances of kidnapping, killings, and intimidation of farmers by the herders as justification for Igboho’s stance.

Earlier warnings issued by Igboho targeted those perpetrating violence against Yoruba communities, threatening to deploy local security outfits to protect farmers and residents. He also indicated plans to mobilize his supporters to comb forests across Yoruba lands, starting with Oke Ogun in Oyo State, to enforce the eviction notice.

“Igboho’s men are preparing to enter the forests in Oke Ogun with the consent of local traditional rulers,” said a source familiar with the situation. “Their mission is to ensure that Fulani herders residing in these areas vacate immediately.”

The tensions between Igboho and Fulani herders have been ongoing for several months, reflecting broader ethnic and security challenges in Nigeria’s Southwest region. Igboho, known for his outspoken advocacy for Yoruba self-determination, has gained significant popularity among some segments of the Yoruba population who view him as a defender against perceived threats from herders.

Efforts to reach representatives of the Fulani community for comment on Igboho’s latest directive were unsuccessful at the time of writing.

The situation remains fluid as local authorities and community leaders work to de-escalate tensions and address underlying grievances. The Nigerian government has yet to officially respond to Igboho’s actions, but observers warn of potential escalation if the situation is not managed carefully.

As developments unfold, stakeholders are watching closely to see how Igboho’s latest ultimatum will impact the already fragile security situation in the Southwest.
