President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria following his participation in the 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU) held in Accra, Ghana. As the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Tinubu addressed critical issues affecting the regional bloc during the summit.
Highlighting the challenges facing ECOWAS, President Tinubu emphasized the rampant insecurity affecting food security, lives, and property across member states. He also underscored poverty and the threat of unconstitutional changes in government as significant issues bedeviling the region.
In response to these challenges, President Tinubu reported that ECOWAS had activated its standby force to combat terrorism, banditry, and other forms of organized crime. This proactive measure aims to enhance regional security and stability amidst growing threats.
Despite these daunting challenges, President Tinubu expressed optimism about the progress made in various sectors. He noted advancements in counter-terrorism efforts, electoral support, economic integration, humanitarian aid, education, healthcare, energy, mining, and agriculture. These advancements, according to President Tinubu, are crucial steps toward addressing the underlying causes of joblessness, hunger, political instability, and poverty in the region.
In his closing remarks at the AU meeting, President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to collaborative efforts within ECOWAS and with the broader AU community to foster sustainable development and prosperity across West Africa.
