The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the introduction of resit examinations for candidates of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This initiative will allow students to retake failed or unsatisfactory papers earlier than previously possible, starting January and February 2025.
Speaking on Ghana’s JoyNews AM Show, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, confirmed the decision. He outlined that candidates who access their WASSCE results and find the need to improve their performance can register for resits through WAEC’s official website or WAEC-accredited internet cafés.
The registration deadline is set for January 8, 2025, while the resit examinations, termed WASSCE PC1, will be conducted from January 24 to February 15, 2025.
Kapi further clarified that even candidates whose results were canceled due to non-malpractice-related issues could register for the resit exams. However, students penalized for examination malpractice remain ineligible if they have been formally banned.
This strategic move by WAEC is expected to provide students with a faster pathway to improve their academic credentials, thereby enabling smoother transitions to higher education or professional opportunities.
WAEC’s initiative also aligns with broader educational reforms aimed at curbing exam malpractices and improving the overall integrity of the examination process.
Recently, the council made headlines by deregistering 13 schools and blacklisting 14 supervisors in Kogi State, Nigeria, for their involvement in examination malpractices.
