Prominent Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has reignited calls for the separation of ethnic groups in Nigeria, citing widespread dissatisfaction among citizens with the state of the nation.
In a video circulating online, Igboho, seen at an airport in the United Kingdom, attributed Nigerians’ declining patriotism to persistent corruption, insecurity, and economic challenges.
Speaking emphatically, Igboho stressed that the unity of Nigeria, as it currently exists, is unsustainable.
“If Nigeria is not working as a country, it is better we go our separate ways,” he stated, underscoring the belief that ethnic self-determination could pave the way for progress.
Highlighting the potential of Yoruba youths, Igboho expressed optimism about the transformation of a sovereign Yoruba nation.
He emphasized that many Yoruba youths, having gained exposure and expertise abroad, are well-equipped to develop their homeland into a thriving society comparable to European nations.
“Our youths will transform Yoruba nation,” Igboho declared. “They have traveled across the world, learned a lot, and their knowledge can build Yoruba land into something extraordinary.”
In his remarks, Igboho took aim at the state of Nigeria’s infrastructure, particularly its airports. He alleged inadequate security measures and instances of theft, asserting that such issues discourage citizens from taking pride in their nationality.
“Even inside the airport, there is no security. They can steal your belongings inside your bag. This makes us sad to identify as Nigerians,” he lamented.
Igboho’s statements come amid ongoing debates about Nigeria’s federal structure and ethnic relations. Calls for secession and restructuring have intensified in recent years, fueled by widespread frustration over governance failures.
Igboho, a controversial figure known for championing Yoruba self-determination, has been vocal in urging leaders to address the concerns of marginalized groups or consider peaceful separations.
