Calls for Mass Support for Party Candidates as Traditional, Community and Interfaith Leaders Demand Improved Living Standards
The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has solicited the support of residents of Oke-Ogun ahead of the 2027 general elections, promising to guarantee full local government autonomy as a strategic measure to accelerate grassroots development across the state.
Alli made the appeal during a pre-campaign engagement with APC leaders, party stakeholders and community representatives in the Oke-Ogun region, where he outlined his commitment to strengthening local governance and promoting development-oriented leadership.
The engagement formed part of the party’s efforts to mobilise support, consolidate its political structures and engage key stakeholders ahead of the 2027 electoral contest.
He stressed the importance of effective local government administration in bringing governance closer to the people, addressing community-specific challenges and ensuring that development initiatives produce tangible benefits at the grassroots.
According to him, granting local government councils full autonomy would provide an opportunity for elected grassroots leaders to discharge their responsibilities more effectively, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, social services and community development.
He maintained that a functional local government system remained critical to achieving inclusive development, insisting that local councils must be empowered to respond directly to the needs and aspirations of their respective communities.
Beyond his pledge on local government autonomy, Alli urged residents of Oke-Ogun to vote massively for all APC candidates contesting executive and legislative positions in the 2027 general elections.
He emphasised the need for political coordination across the different tiers of government, arguing that the election of candidates from the same political platform could facilitate policy alignment, effective representation and the implementation of development programmes.
The APC governorship candidate called on party members, traditional institutions, community leaders, youth groups, women and other stakeholders to rally behind the party’s candidates, stressing that collective political support would be essential to advancing the APC’s development agenda for Oyo State.
He also underscored the importance of sustained engagement with the electorate, suggesting that constructive dialogue between political leaders and communities would help identify pressing needs and shape responsive governance policies.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the APC leadership and its candidates to interact with stakeholders in Oke-Ogun, a region whose support could be significant in the party’s efforts to strengthen its electoral prospects across Oyo State.
Other APC candidates at the engagement also appealed to residents to support the party’s candidates in the forthcoming elections, presenting their political aspirations as part of a broader effort to promote development and improve the welfare of the people.
The APC senatorial candidate for Oyo North Senatorial District, Chief Mrs. Hannah Ogunesan, also called for public support, emphasising the importance of effective legislative representation and development-focused leadership.
Similarly, the party’s House of Representatives candidate for Atisbo, Saki East and Saki West Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kareem Tajudeen Abisodun, urged residents to support the APC, presenting the forthcoming elections as an opportunity to advance the developmental aspirations of the constituency.
The APC House of Assembly candidate for Saki West State Constituency, Hon. Shittu Ibrahim Aremu, also joined the appeal for popular support, reinforcing the party’s message of collective development and coordinated representation at the state and federal levels.
The candidates collectively sought the backing of residents, arguing that effective representation requires leaders who understand the needs of their constituencies and remain committed to addressing them through practical initiatives.
Their appeals reflected the party’s broader effort to mobilise support across Oke-Ogun and encourage voters to consider the APC’s candidates across the different electoral positions.
In their response, community leaders, representatives of interfaith groups and other stakeholders welcomed the engagement while urging the APC governorship candidate to remain committed to his promises and prioritise policies capable of improving the living conditions of residents across Oyo State.
The stakeholders stressed that political engagements should translate into concrete development outcomes rather than end with campaign assurances.
They called for sustained attention to the socio-economic challenges confronting communities, including the need for improved infrastructure, accessible social services and initiatives that would enhance the welfare of ordinary citizens.
The Okere of Saki, Oba Khalid Olabisi, was among the prominent traditional voices who urged Alli to remain faithful to his commitments and ensure that the aspirations of the people remained central to his political agenda.
The traditional ruler’s intervention underscored the expectations of community stakeholders that political leaders should demonstrate accountability, responsiveness and a genuine commitment to public service.
The participants also emphasised the importance of improving living standards across Oyo State, urging political office seekers to make the welfare of residents a central consideration in their policies and programmes.
Alli’s pledge on local government autonomy emerged as one of the key issues highlighted during the engagement, reflecting the continuing debate over the role of grassroots administration in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental framework.
Local government councils are constitutionally positioned to serve as the closest tier of government to the people, with responsibilities that directly affect community development, primary-level services and local infrastructure.
However, the effectiveness of local administration depends on financial capacity, institutional accountability and the ability of councils to operate within the constitutional framework.
The Supreme Court’s July 2024 judgment on local government financial autonomy further intensified national discussions about the independence of councils and their capacity to manage funds for the benefit of their communities.
Against this background, Alli’s commitment to guaranteeing full local government autonomy is likely to attract attention among voters who regard grassroots governance as essential to addressing longstanding development challenges.
For residents of Oke-Ogun, the significance of such a pledge will ultimately be measured by its implementation and its impact on community infrastructure, public services and opportunities for local economic growth.
