Nigeria’s football fraternity and political community have been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran football coach and grassroots politician, Hon. Coach Kehinde Adewuyi Adetola, popularly known as “Coach Kenny,” who passed away on Friday, June 5, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 64 years old.
The demise of the respected sports administrator and public servant marks the end of a remarkable chapter defined by decades of dedication to football development, community service and youth empowerment. Renowned for his contributions both on and off the field, Adetola left an enduring imprint on the lives of countless individuals across Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
Throughout his lifetime, Coach Kenny distinguished himself as a passionate advocate for grassroots sports and human capital development. His involvement in football earned him national recognition, particularly during his tenure as Assistant Coach of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, the country’s U-20 national football team. In that role, he contributed significantly to the identification and grooming of emerging talents, helping to shape the careers of young footballers who would later make notable impacts within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Beyond his achievements in sports, Adetola was equally respected for his commitment to public administration and community advancement. Between 2007 and 2010, he served as Vice Chairman of Saki West Local Government Area in Oyo State, where he played a prominent role in implementing policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of residents.
His administration focused on infrastructural development, youth participation in governance and initiatives designed to strengthen social cohesion within the local government.
Colleagues and residents who worked closely with him recall a leader whose approach to governance was rooted in accessibility, inclusiveness and genuine concern for the wellbeing of the people. His ability to connect with individuals across different social and political backgrounds earned him widespread admiration and respect throughout his years in public office.
A prominent figure in Oke-Ogun politics, Adetola remained actively involved in the political affairs of the region long after leaving office. His passion for service led him to contest for the Saki West State Constituency seat during the 2023 general election under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Although unsuccessful in his bid, he continued to contribute meaningfully to political discourse and grassroots mobilisation within the constituency.
His political journey later saw him become an influential stakeholder in the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) before subsequently joining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), where he maintained a strong presence as a respected party leader and adviser until his passing.
Widely regarded as a mentor and father figure, the late Adetola devoted much of his time to guiding young people and creating opportunities for their growth. Through football, politics and community engagement, he inspired many youths to pursue excellence and become productive members of society. Several beneficiaries of his mentorship have described him as a selfless leader whose doors were always open to those seeking support, encouragement or direction.
Since the announcement of his death, tributes have continued to pour in from former players, political associates, traditional leaders, community organisations and residents across Oke-Ogun and other parts of the country. Many have celebrated his life as one characterised by integrity, humility and unwavering dedication to the development of others.
Several mourners described him as a compassionate leader who consistently placed the interests of his community above personal ambitions. Others praised his role in fostering unity among political actors and promoting peaceful coexistence within the region, noting that his counsel and wisdom would be sorely missed.
The Adetola family confirmed that the deceased is survived by his wife, children and aged mother. Family members have expressed appreciation for the overwhelming show of love, prayers and support received from sympathisers since the news of his passing became public.
As preparations begin for his final rites, funeral and thanksgiving service arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
