Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has fired back at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, following the latter’s recent statement claiming that the APC would take over all states in the South-West, including Oyo and Osun.
Makinde, in a strongly worded response, dismissed Ganduje’s remarks as a distraction, asserting that both Oyo and Osun states are firmly under the control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and that the people of the two states are poised to reject any attempts by the APC to make inroads.
Ganduje’s comments were made after the APC’s victory in Ondo State, where Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa secured re-election. In his speech following Aiyedatiwa’s win, Ganduje declared that the APC was on course to dominate the South-West, identifying Oyo and Osun as the next targets for the party’s expansion.
However, speaking at the commissioning of the dual carriageway project at the Stadium Roundabout/Oke Baale Roundabout/Ilesa Garage Roundabout in Osogbo, Osun State, Governor Makinde called Ganduje’s statement an unrealistic and misguided prediction.
The Oyo State governor emphasized that the APC’s claim to dominance in the region is far from a certainty, as the PDP remains strong in both Oyo and Osun.
“We are not distracted by the claims of the APC, the people of Oyo and Osun States are well aware of the promises and achievements of the PDP, our people will continue to reject any attempt by the APC to impose their leadership on us.”
The ongoing political rivalry between the PDP and APC in the South-West has intensified, with both parties vying for control over the region’s key states.
While APC’s success in Ondo has given the party momentum, the PDP has maintained a stronghold in Oyo and Osun, where Makinde and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, respectively, hold office.
Makinde further pointed out that the South-West, under PDP leadership, has experienced significant infrastructural and developmental progress, highlighting the importance of continued good governance.
He also noted that the commissioning of the newly completed road project in Osogbo was a testament to the PDP’s commitment to improving the lives of the people in the region.
