Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day for workers in the state to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH, urging Muslims and residents to reflect on the values of peace, sacrifice and communal harmony as they celebrate the occasion.
The governor made the declaration in a statement issued on Monday, extending warm felicitations to the Muslim faithful across Oyo State and beyond on the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year. Makinde described the Hijrah celebration as a significant spiritual milestone that commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, an event that symbolizes faith, perseverance, resilience and divine guidance.
According to the governor, the occasion provides an opportunity for Muslims to renew their commitment to righteousness, justice, compassion and service to humanity. He noted that the lessons embedded in the Hijrah remain relevant to contemporary society, especially at a time when communities are seeking greater unity, peaceful coexistence and collective progress.
Makinde urged residents of Oyo State to use the period to pray for the continued peace, security and development of the state and Nigeria as a whole. He emphasized the need for citizens to embrace tolerance and mutual understanding regardless of religious, ethnic or political differences, stressing that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and stability.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting religious harmony and inclusive governance, noting that Oyo State has continued to serve as a model of peaceful coexistence among adherents of different faiths.
