In a decisive move aimed at quelling rising political tension, members of the Oyo State House of Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde and the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, dismissing as baseless the swirling rumours of an alleged impeachment plot within the state’s political structure.
The resolution was reached during plenary in Ibadan, where lawmakers across party lines reaffirmed their loyalty to the current administration and legislative leadership, signaling a rare moment of unity amid speculation that had threatened to destabilize governance in the state.
The motion for the vote of confidence was moved by the Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, who represents Ogbomoso South State Constituency. Presenting the motion on the floor, Adedoyin described the impeachment rumours as “malicious fabrications” designed to sow discord between the executive and legislative arms of government.
According to him, the Assembly remains committed to sustaining a cooperative relationship with Governor Makinde’s administration, emphasizing that such synergy has been instrumental in advancing legislative reforms and developmental policies across Oyo State. He stressed that no member of the House had been engaged in any discussions or actions suggesting a move to remove either the governor or the speaker.
Lawmakers who spoke during the debate echoed similar sentiments, noting that the Assembly under Speaker Ogundoyin has maintained stability, transparency, and adherence to democratic principles. They warned against the spread of misinformation, which they said could undermine public trust and distract from governance priorities.
The Speaker, Ogundoyin, in his response, expressed appreciation to his colleagues for their “resounding show of solidarity,” describing the vote as a testament to the unity and shared vision of the Assembly. He reiterated his commitment to upholding legislative independence while fostering constructive engagement with the executive arm.
Governor Makinde, though not present at the plenary, was also commended for what lawmakers described as his inclusive leadership style and respect for institutional boundaries.
