The South-West leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Oyo State Governor, , while calling on Nigerians to embrace unity and resist divisive political narratives as the 2027 general elections approach.
The party made this known on Monday during a press briefing held at its zonal headquarters, Adagunodo House, in Ibadan, where it also reiterated its commitment to democratic stability and people-oriented governance.
Addressing journalists, the PDP South-West Zonal Secretary, , praised Makinde’s leadership style, describing it as a model of stability, focus, and institutional strengthening. He noted that the governor’s administration has consistently delivered democratic dividends to the people of Oyo State while contributing meaningfully to the sustenance of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
According to him, Makinde’s governance record stands as a testament to the PDP’s capacity to provide credible leadership at both state and national levels.
Atofarati further reaffirmed the zone’s loyalty to the PDP’s National Working Committee under the leadership of , stressing that the party remains united and focused despite ongoing political challenges.
He emphasized that the PDP is positioning itself as a viable and people-driven alternative capable of addressing the nation’s socio-economic difficulties through inclusive governance, stability, and strategic development initiatives.
The party also dismissed as unfounded the speculation surrounding an alleged impeachment plot against Governor Makinde, describing such claims as baseless and politically motivated. Atofarati stated that the rumours were part of a calculated attempt to create unnecessary tension within the polity, warning that such narratives could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid being misled by misinformation designed to destabilize the political environment.
In a strongly worded response, the PDP criticized former Ekiti State Governor, , over remarks suggesting a plot by Makinde to remove the Olubadan of Ibadan.
The party described Fayose’s comments as irresponsible and self-serving, arguing that they risk inflaming tensions and politicizing revered traditional institutions. It maintained that both the Oyo State Government and the Ibadan traditional council had already debunked the allegations, insisting there was no basis for such claims.
The PDP leadership concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain calm, united, and committed to the democratic process, particularly in the face of economic hardship and political uncertainty. It warned against the actions of “disgruntled political actors” seeking to manufacture crises for personal gain, reiterating that the party stands firmly with citizens and remains dedicated to advancing national progress through responsible leadership and inclusive policies.
