Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, played host to a landmark gathering of labour leaders, government officials, and stakeholders as the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Oyo State Chapter, formally swore in newly elected executives across its 25 local government branches in a ceremony marked by pomp, policy direction, and renewed commitment to grassroots governance.
The event, held at the Local Government Staff Training School within the State Secretariat in Ibadan, brought together key figures in the labour movement, including the National President of NULGE, Comrade Aliyu Haruna Kankara, and the Oyo State President, Comrade Ayobami Adeogun, alongside other dignitaries and union members.
The swearing-in ceremony was not merely symbolic but represented a significant transition in leadership across local government structures in the state. According to reports, the inauguration of the branch executives followed a broader effort to strengthen institutional capacity within the union and improve service delivery at the grassroots level.
Addressing participants, union leaders emphasized the evolving role of NULGE executives, not only as representatives of workers but also as strategic negotiators, policy influencers, and defenders of labour rights within Nigeria’s local government system.
The presence of the National President underscored the importance of the ceremony, as he administered the oath of office and charged the new executives to uphold the principles of accountability, discipline, and transparency in the discharge of their duties.
In a major policy announcement during the ceremony, the Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission approved a comprehensive leadership training programme for the newly sworn-in executives. The initiative, stakeholders say, is aimed at enhancing governance efficiency and equipping union leaders with modern administrative and negotiation skills.
The training is expected to cover key areas such as strategic thinking, labour relations, conflict resolution, and effective communication, core competencies considered vital in navigating the complexities of public sector unionism in Nigeria.
Beyond the inauguration, the event also featured the celebration of International Women’s Day, reinforcing the union’s commitment to gender inclusion and empowerment. With the theme centered on justice, rights, and action for women and girls, speakers highlighted the indispensable role of women in public service and labour movements.
The programme further included the much-anticipated crowning of “Omidan NULGE 2026,” a symbolic initiative that blends advocacy with cultural celebration, promoting both intellectual and social excellence among women within the union.
In his address, Comrade Ayobami Adeogun reiterated the union’s commitment to protecting workers’ welfare and strengthening unity across all local government councils in the state. Having previously been inaugurated for another term in office, Adeogun assured members of sustained advocacy and progressive reforms within the system.
He described the swearing-in ceremony as a “new chapter” in NULGE’s journey, urging the executives to see their positions as a call to service rather than privilege.
With renewed leadership, strategic training, and a focus on inclusivity, NULGE in Oyo State appears poised to deepen its influence, not just as a labour union, but as a critical stakeholder in local governance and public sector transformation.
