A leading historian, Olusegun Osoba, is dead. He was 92.
Mr Osoba died at his residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Wednesday.
The deceased trained at the University College Ibadan before proceeding to the Moscow State University where he obtained PhD in History.
Osoba returned to Nigeria in the early 1960s to take an appointment with the Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife).
He was widely regarded as a distinguished scholar whose life and work were focused on teaching and research in economic history and political economy.
The Yusufu Bala Usman Institute, in a statement signed by Norma Perchonock on Thursday, hailed the deceased’s contributions to economic history and to interrogate prevailing economic systems and their impact on development in Nigeria.
“His work in economic history was groundbreaking in many ways as he sought to expose the actual workings of the economic system that was holding back development in the country.
“Segun is gone but he has left an enduring legacy and a shining example for patriotic Nigerians to emulate,” the statement read.
The statement added that funeral arrangements would be announced by the family in due course.
