The Federal Government has intensified efforts to curb examination malpractice in Nigeria, setting a target of complete elimination by 2027 through the adoption of Computer-Based Examinations (CBE).
This was disclosed during the National Examinations Council (NECO) Silver Jubilee celebration in Abuja, where government officials highlighted reforms aimed at strengthening transparency, credibility, and global competitiveness in the country’s examination system.
Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima, Barrister Bashir Maidugu stressed that credible examinations are vital to national development and human capital growth.
He commended NECO’s embrace of digital innovation, noting that the shift toward computer-based testing has already resulted in nearly a 90 percent reduction in examination malpractice.
In his remarks, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced that NECO will begin full implementation of Computer-Based Examinations this year. He said the move is part of broader efforts to modernise assessment systems and align Nigeria’s examination processes with international standards.
According to the minister, CBE will facilitate real-time monitoring, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the detection and prevention of examination fraud.
The Federal Ministry of Education reiterated its commitment to leveraging technology-driven reforms to restore integrity in the education sector while expanding access to credible and efficient examination systems nationwide.
